ScreenFlowy or Screen Studio: which should you choose?

Both are Mac screen recorders that zoom in on your clicks automatically, and both can style the frame, record an iPhone and export 4K at 60 fps. The biggest difference is how you pay. ScreenFlowy is a free download with every recording and editing feature included: 480p and 720p exports are free forever, and Pro, a one-time $49.99, unlocks 1080p and up, plus GIF. Screen Studio is subscription-only, at $29 a month or $9 a month billed yearly, and its one-time licence is no longer sold. ScreenFlowy is also a native Mac app built with Swift, while Screen Studio is built on Electron (web technology). If you’d rather not subscribe, and want 3D camera moves and webcam background removal with no green screen, choose ScreenFlowy; if you’re used to a subscription, or still on an Intel Mac, you can stay with Screen Studio.

Price: a subscription, or a one-time purchase

ScreenFlowy is a free download, with every recording and editing feature included. Video exports at 480p and 720p are free forever, with no watermark; exporting at 1080p, 2K, 4K or original size, or any GIF, means unlocking Pro: a one-time $49.99 that’s yours for good, not a subscription.

Screen Studio is subscription-only: $29 a month paid monthly, or the equivalent of $9 a month paid yearly, with every feature in every plan. A one-time licence was sold in the past, but it’s no longer available to new buyers; students and teachers get 40% off.

How they’re built: a native app, or web technology

ScreenFlowy is a native app built with Swift specifically for macOS, and it uses Apple silicon’s hardware acceleration to record and export.

Screen Studio is built on Electron: the official installer for version 4.0.4 carries the full Electron framework, in other words a whole Chromium web engine packaged inside the app.

Camera moves: both follow your clicks, ScreenFlowy adds 3D

Both note where you click and build camera moves automatically once you stop recording, and both let you add and adjust moves by hand.

ScreenFlowy turns every click into a shot: it pushes in on what you clicked, follows when the cursor travels, and pulls back to the full view when you stop interacting. Each shot can be a steady 2D zoom or a 3D move with tilt and perspective, and you can change it on the timeline at any time. Screen Studio has standard zooms, and version 4.0 added a magnifier effect; its official site doesn’t mention 3D tilting camera moves.

Webcam: cutout and backgrounds

ScreenFlowy records your webcam to its own track, so you can change its shape, position and size after the take. Without a green screen, it lifts you out of the room, then blurs the background or swaps it for a built-in backdrop or an image of your own, while Portrait and Studio Light soften the look.

Screen Studio can also adjust the webcam’s position and shape and switch layouts at any time; version 4.0 added webcam background removal (currently in beta), face tracking and colour grading.

Editing and recording: reframe after the take

After recording, ScreenFlowy can switch between wide, vertical and square in one click, and the background, recording and webcam fall into place on their own. Drag an edge to crop away what you don’t need, then add a Spotlight, Mosaic or Magnifier mask to light up the key detail, enlarge small text or hide anything private. The webcam, microphone and system audio can also be exported as separate raw files. And while you record, a teleprompter lets you talk to camera without memorising your script.

Screen Studio also supports cutting, changing the aspect ratio and adjusting zooms by hand.

Privacy and system

ScreenFlowy needs no account: recording, editing and export all happen on your Mac, and nothing is uploaded. Its interface comes in 15 languages, and it needs macOS 14 or later on a Mac with Apple silicon.

Screen Studio also saves and processes recordings on your computer, and its official site says recording data isn’t sent to its servers; cloud features such as share links are optional, and basic usage data is collected by default but can be turned off. It needs macOS 13.1 or later and supports Apple silicon and some Intel Macs from 2018 or later; its official site doesn’t say which interface languages it offers.
