System requirements

  • macOS 14 (Sonoma) or later.
  • An Apple silicon Mac — M1 or newer. Intel Macs are not supported.
  • Free disk space for your recordings. Long, high-resolution captures at 60 fps can be large; ScreenFlowy pauses recording automatically if the destination volume runs low.

Both apps are distributed through the Mac App Store, so updates arrive the same way as any other App Store app.

Permissions and how to fix them

macOS gates screen capture behind explicit permission. If recording fails, produces a black frame, or the app tells you permission is missing, work through this list.

Grant Screen Recording

  1. Open System Settings.
  2. Go to Privacy & Security.
  3. Open Screen & System Audio Recording (called Screen Recording on macOS 14).
  4. Enable ScreenFlowy (or ScreenFlowy Snap).
  5. Quit and reopen the app — macOS only applies the change on relaunch.

No automatic camera moves after recording

The camera moves are generated from your clicks during the take and need no extra permission. Check Settings › Device › Auto Zoom on Click: with No Auto Zoom none are generated, so pick 3D Motion or 2D Zoom. After a take you can also add moves by hand on the timeline's zoom track.

Keystrokes do not show in the video

The keystroke overlay needs Input Monitoring: turn on ScreenFlowy under Privacy & Security › Input Monitoring, then quit and reopen the app. A take recorded before you allowed it has no keystrokes to show.

No webcam or no sound

Camera and Microphone are separate permissions under Privacy & Security. System audio is covered by the Screen & System Audio Recording permission. If a device is connected but not listed, disconnect and reconnect it, then reopen the recording panel so the device list refreshes.

The permission is already enabled but capture still fails

  1. Quit the app completely.
  2. Turn its toggle off and back on in Privacy & Security.
  3. Reopen the app.
  4. If it still fails, restart your Mac — macOS occasionally holds a stale capture entitlement until reboot.

Common questions

Can I turn the automatic camera moves off?

Yes. Choose No Auto Zoom under Settings › Device › Auto Zoom on Click before you record, and none are generated. After a take, every automatic move sits on the timeline's zoom track, where you can adjust or delete it, or add your own by hand.

Can I record a single window instead of the whole screen?

Yes — a full display, a single window, a region you draw, or an iPhone connected to your Mac. When drawing a region you can pick 16:9, 4:3, 1:1 or 9:16, type an exact size and position in pixels, and save the sizes you use most. ScreenFlowy keeps its own recording bar and prompts out of the capture.

Where does ScreenFlowy save my recordings?

Projects are kept in a ScreenFlowy library in your Movies folder by default, and you can move the library in Settings. Exports go wherever you choose at export time. Nothing is uploaded — see the privacy policy for the full picture.

My export is very large. What should I change?

File size is driven mostly by resolution, frame rate and quality. Dropping from 4K to 1080p, or from 60 fps to 30 fps, usually cuts the file dramatically with little visible difference for a screen recording. For short loops in a changelog or a README, GIF at a reduced size is often the better format.

Can I open a project on another Mac?

Yes. Each project is a single .screenflowy package that holds the screen, audio and webcam recordings and any media you imported, so copy the package across and open it. Exported MP4 and GIF files play anywhere.

How do I use my purchase on another Mac?

App Store purchases are tied to your Apple Account. Sign in to the Mac App Store on the other Mac and the app is under Purchased; for ScreenFlowy Pro, click Restore Purchases in the app. If you need a refund, that is handled by Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com.

ScreenFlowy Snap

Snap is a separate app for still screenshots. It lives in the menu bar rather than in the Dock, so if you cannot find its window, click the Snap icon in the menu bar.

  • Capture — region, window, full desktop, or a scrolling capture of a whole page, from the menu bar or a global hotkey.
  • Scrolling capture — the Scroll down button needs Privacy & Security › Accessibility. If you would rather not allow it, scroll with your mouse or trackpad instead.
  • Hotkey — configurable in Snap's settings. It will not register if another app has already claimed the same combination; pick a different one.
  • Automatic redaction — on-device text recognition finds emails, links, phone numbers, tokens, card numbers and ID numbers and masks them. Always check the result before sharing; treat it as an assistant, not a guarantee.
  • Storage — history, presets and cached images are stored locally and can be cleared from within the app.

Reporting a bug

The fastest fixes come from reports that include:

  1. What you were trying to do, and what happened instead.
  2. The exact steps to reproduce it, if you can find them.
  3. Your macOS version and Mac model (Apple menu → About This Mac).
  4. The app version, from the About window.
  5. A screenshot or a short screen recording of the problem, if it is visual.

Please redact anything sensitive before attaching files. Send it to [email protected].
